The Work of the Governing Body

Welcome to the section of the website where you can find out more about our school’s governors and the work that they do.

Since 1988, school governing bodies have taken on more responsibilities and their role has become more important as schools have gained increasing autonomy.
Governors are the responsible authority in law for the use of public money delegated to the school in the budget and also for the educational standards achieved.

The main role of the governors is one of monitoring and evaluation to support and challenge the Headteacher and her staff.  We help them to set and reach challenging targets, and to strive for excellence across the whole spectrum of school life.
We have a legal responsibility to:

  • Ensure that the National Curriculum is followed
  • Oversee the school’s budget
  • Monitor the condition of the school buildings and grounds
  • Ensure that Special Educational Needs are met

The governing body complements and enhances the school leadership and management by ensuring that all statutory duties are met, appointing the headteacher and holding the Headteacher to account for the impact of the school’s work on improving outcomes for all pupils.
Governors are most effective when they are fully involved in the school’s self-evaluation and use the knowledge gained to challenge the school, understand its strengths and weaknesses and contribute to shaping its strategic direction.
To this end, as well as meeting at least twice termly in full, the Governors have organised themselves into Committees that meet at least once a term in order to make best use of members’ skills, knowledge and expertise:

  • Community & Christian Values
  • Curriculum
  •  Finance

The Governors have set up systems to monitor pupil progress and to evaluate the success of any teaching strategies organised as a result of the monitoring process.  Each Governor has special responsibility for a wide range of curricular subjects and other matters relating to school life.

The Governing Body wants to do the very best for the school, the pupils and the local communities. That is why members give so freely of their time.
